WebCD Globe Changing URL Retrieval Properties

You may not want to retrieve every document on your Web site. WebCD makes it easy to customize your WebCD content through the retrieval properties of each URL.

The retrieval properties of an URL in the Retrieval View determine whether the URL will be retrieved or not when you start the retrieval process. You can change the retrieval properties of a host, directory or document URL by:

Bullet Selecting Retrieve or Do Not Retrieve from the URL Shortcut menu (accessed by right-clicking the URL in the Retrieval View), or
Bullet Changing the Retrieval Properties (accessed by selecting Properties from the Edit menu or the URL Shortcut menu).

Changing retrieval properties of a host or a directory URL

Since URLs inherit the retrieval property from their parent, you will want to pay close attention to how you set retrieval properties for a host or a directory URL.

Changing properties using the shortcut menu

Changing the retrieval properties using the Retrieve and Do Not Retrieve options on the shortcut menu operates differently depending on whether the folder or host is collapsed or expanded.

If the folder or host is collapsed (designated by a plus sign Plus Sign icon), the Retrieve and Do Not Retrieve options apply the property recursively to all items within the URL. It is the same as using the Retrieval Properties dialog and selecting the Apply to all items within this directory URL option.

If the folder or host is expanded (designated by a minus sign Minus Sign icon), the Retrieve and Do Not Retrieve options apply the property only to the folder or host. Therefore, if the item is a folder which already contains some documents marked for retrieval, those documents are unchanged - they will still be marked for retrieval! If any additional documents for this folder are discovered the next time you perform a retrieval, they will inherit the current retrieval setting of their parent, that being Do Not Retrieve.

Changing properties using the Properties dialog

Changing the retrieval properties using the Properties dialog box works the same whether the folder or host is collapsed or expanded. Select Retrieve or Do not retrieve to change the retrieval property of the currently selected folder or host. Turn on the Apply to all items within this directory URL option if you wish to apply the property recursively to all items within the URL.

Changing retrieval properties of a document URL

Change the retrieval properties of a document URL either through the URL Retrieval Properties screen or directly from the Retrieve and Do Not Retrieve options on the Shortcut menu.

Note Right-click on the URL to see the shortcut menu.
